Collaboration between Spectronik and H2m advances hydrogen mobility education across Spain

Our Authorized Distributor, H2m Hidrógeno Manufacturado S.L. (H2m), has successfully converted three Citroën Ami vehicles into hydrogen fuel cell powered electric vehicles, demonstrating a practical approach to extending the range and operational flexibility of compact urban mobility platforms.
The Citroën Ami is a compact battery electric vehicle designed for urban transportation, featuring a top speed of 45 km/h, a 5.5 kWh battery pack, and a driving range of up to 75 km on battery power alone.
The Spectronik Hydrogen Fuel Cell Conversion Kit installed in the Citroën Ami comprises:
- Protium-3000 Fuel Cell Power System providing up to 3 kW of traction power;
- Cerebral-55 Smart DC-DC Converter to regulate voltage and current to match the vehicle motor requirements;
- 20 L Type III 350 bar Hydrogen Cylinder providing an additional 7.5 kWh of net usable energy;
- Miniature Gas Pressure Regulator (MGPR) to reduce the high-pressure hydrogen stored in the cylinder to the 0.5 bar(g) required at the fuel cell inlet.
A total of three Citroën Ami vehicles were converted to hydrogen fuel cell power as part of an educational project involving CIFP As Mercedes (Lugo), IES Virgen de la Paloma (Madrid), and CIFP Río Tormes (Salamanca).
By combining the Citroën Ami's original 5.5 kWh battery with an additional 7.5 kWh of usable energy from the Spectronik Hydrogen Fuel Cell Conversion Kit, the vehicle's total onboard energy capacity is more than doubled. This increases the theoretical driving range from 75 km to approximately 180 km, while enabling fast refuelling of hydrogen gas.
The project also provides students with valuable hands-on experience in hydrogen energy, fuel cell systems, high-pressure gas storage, and sustainable transportation technologies. It demonstrates how educational institutions can play an active role in accelerating the adoption of hydrogen technologies by providing students with real-world experience in the design, integration, operation, and maintenance of fuel cell powered vehicles.
This successful deployment highlights the growing adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology in educational and mobility applications, while strengthening the collaboration between Spectronik and H2m in advancing hydrogen-powered transportation solutions across Europe.
